Home care

Respite care

A planned, dependable break for the person doing the caring — arranged so that nothing slips while they are away from it.

What this covers

  • Regular scheduled hours, weekly or fortnightly
  • Longer blocks — a day, a weekend, a holiday
  • Overnight and waking-night cover
  • Emergency cover when a carer is ill or called away
  • The same personal care and support the person already receives
  • Company and activity, not just supervision
  • A written handover so nothing has to be explained twice

Who it is for

  • A husband, wife or partner who has become the main carer and has not had a clear day in months.
  • An adult child holding a parent’s care together alongside a job and a family of their own.
  • A carer facing surgery, a funeral or a trip that cannot be moved.
  • Anyone who has started to feel that asking for a break would be letting someone down.

What to expect

Respite works when it is predictable. A break that has to be negotiated each time is not really a break, so we would rather set a standing arrangement you can count on than react to each crisis.

We spend time on the handover before the first session. Routines, preferences, what helps on a bad day, who to call — written down, so the person receiving support gets continuity and the carer is not on the phone the whole time they are meant to be off.

Asking for respite is not a failure of care. Carers who get regular breaks sustain the arrangement for longer, and that is usually the outcome everyone actually wants.

Questions people ask

Will the same worker come each time?
That is what we aim for, and it is most of what makes respite work. Where a second person is needed for cover, we introduce them before they are needed rather than on the day.
Can we book a one-off rather than a regular slot?
Yes. Many people start with a one-off for something specific and move to a standing arrangement once they see how it goes.
How much notice do you need?
For a regular arrangement, as much as you can give. For emergency cover, call us and we will tell you honestly what we can do — we would rather say no quickly than leave you waiting.
