Find support
Not sure where to start?
Most people call us before they have worked out what they need, and that is fine — working it out is part of the job. This page lays out the three kinds of support we provide, and what to do next depending on where you are.
Three kinds of support
Disability Support Program
For adults with disabilities, and the people who help them.
Person-directed support funded through the Nova Scotia Disability Support Program. Help at home, in the community, and with building the skills and routines you want.
Home care
For families arranging care for someone at home.
Private in-home support, arranged around the household it happens in — personal care, nursing, dementia support, companionship and end-of-life care.
Facility staffing
For healthcare and long-term care organizations.
Qualified care professionals for planned coverage, sustained placements and urgent gaps. This part of ABCare works with organizations rather than individuals.
Where are you with funding?
Disability Support Program funding is arranged through the province, not through us. Here is what usually happens next, whichever stage you are at.
My funding is approved
Your coordinator can explain which providers are available to you. You can ask to speak with ABCare Living to decide whether our approach feels right, and we will work with you and your coordinator from there.
I have applied and I am waiting
You are welcome to talk to us while you wait. It costs nothing, commits you to nothing, and it means you already know what one of your options looks like when a decision comes.
I have not applied, or I do not know if I qualify
Eligibility is decided by the Disability Support Program, not by us, so we cannot tell you whether you qualify. We can tell you what support looks like in practice, which is often the thing people are really trying to find out.
This is not about DSP at all
Home care is arranged privately and does not involve the programme. If you are arranging care for a parent or partner, that is the page you want.
ABCare does not assess eligibility or approve funding — those decisions are made through the Disability Support Program. Services and start dates are confirmed only after funding, plan alignment, staffing, safety and documentation requirements are complete.
Starting a conversation is simple
Tell us what you are looking for
Call, email or use the short form. You do not need to know which service you need.
Meet your ABCare contact
We listen, answer questions and discuss whether we may be a good fit.
Confirm the plan
Where DSP is involved, we work with you and the appropriate coordinator to confirm the plan, funding and required information.
Meet the right staff
We discuss matching, availability, schedules and backup arrangements before confirming a start date.
Stay connected
Your case manager remains involved and reviews support with you as needs change.
Would an easier-to-read version help?
We have written a version of the DSP page in short sentences, one idea at a time. It says the same things with less to get through.
Still not sure? That is what the call is for.
Tell us what is going on and we will tell you which of our services fits, what it would involve, and whether the honest answer is that it is not us.
Or call us at 902-877-8450
